Johan is a physician with more than twenty-five years of experience in the pharmaceutical industry as well as over fifteen years in Oncology clinical development and medical affairs. Focus has been on both targeted agents, small molecules as well as antibody therapies; in this in both solid and liquid tumors, as well as immune-oncology. Johan worked for several years at Novartis in Oncology Translational Medicine with particular focus on biomarker driven clinical studies in order to identify the optimal patient population as well as optimize clinical benefit. In addition, Johan has worked closely with other functions while in medical affairs to optimize pre as well as post-launch programs to further optimize business opportunities.

Matthew Bryant – Vice President, Global Medical Affairs
Dr. Matt Bryant is the Vice President, Global Medical Affairs, at Eiger BioPharmaceuticals. He did his training at the University of California, San Francisco and completed an ASHP-AMCP Managed Care specialty residency at Blue Shield of California. He has been working in healthcare for more than 20 years and has experience in the medical device, biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries. His past Medical Affairs roles were at Bayer, Theravance Biopharma, Salix Pharmaceuticals and InterMune. He also serves on the UCSF Pharmacy Alumni Association Board of Governors.
Shannon Colton is the Director of US Medical Training at EMD Serono, with a team of medical trainers to support the Neurology & Immunology and Oncology field teams. Shannon has developed and implemented a training curriculum that combines scientific acumen with communication/presentation skills to ensure MSL Field Excellence. With over 15 years of experience in science education and communication, Shannon has built a training program to support MSL teams in the different stages of a product’s life cycle, from pre-launch to post-approval. Shannon earned her PhD in Developmental Biology from Marquette University, followed by several years in the field of science education using 3D printed models to engage students in learning biochemistry and molecular biology. Her industry experience includes time as an MSL, a Global Medical Trainer, a US Medical Trainer. Shannon’s professional goal is to convince others that training can be fun – she is making headway on that goal one MSL at a time.
Cristina Costantino – Senior Global Scientific Director
Cristina Costantino, PhD MBA, is Senior Global Scientific Director at Roche, working out of the beautiful Genentech campus in South San Francisco, CA. She brings an entrepreneurial spirit to launch readiness, drawing from international experience in both rare disease and highly competitive markets. In 2017-2018, Cristina led the global medical launch team for OCREVUS, now recognized as the most successful launch in the history of Roche. Cristina has held home office and field medical affairs roles in both large and small specialty biotech. She is an immunologist by training, who received her doctorate from Harvard University, post-doctoral training at Mount Sinai School of Medicine, and earned her MBA at The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania.

Carol Hoang is a pharmaceutical and healthcare executive with 15+ years of experience across multiple sectors of the healthcare industry including biotech, pharmaceutical, managed care, specialty distribution, and digital health. Experience includes domestic and international markets at world-leading companies (eg, Novartis, Genentech/Roche, Bristol-Myers Squibb, CVS Health) across different therapeutic areas (eg, cardiovascular, oncology and ophthalmology). Carol is currently VP Medical Affairs for Adverum Biotechnologies, a clinical stage gene therapy company working towards a cure of certain retinal diseases.
She builds the vision and drives implementation of medical strategies and tactics at a global and local level, in large and small companies. Competencies include collaborating across multiple disciplines, building advocacy and creating compelling scientific communication platforms to make the value proposition of products and therapies clear.
She earned her Doctor of Pharmacy and MBA degrees from the University of Southern California Pharmacy School and Marshall School of Business, respectively.
Scott graduated with a Pharm.D. from Creighton University. He then completed a one-year Pharmacotherapy Residency and a two-year Infectious Diseases Fellowship. He served on faculty at both the University of Arkansas and Creighton University Pharmacy Schools, teaching infectious diseases and oncology with clinical practice sites in bone marrow transplantation, oncology/hematology and infectious disease. In 2006 he joined Cubist and remained at Cubist (acquired by Merck) until 2015. During his tenure at Cubist he spent time in a number of areas within medical affairs, including a number of leadership roles. Following Cubist worked at Chiasma and later at Alkermes (both as a Senior Director Medical Affairs) and was responsible for leading a number of areas within Medical Affairs. In 2019 he started consulting with Kaleido Biosciences building out their Scientific and Medical Affairs function and in July of 2019 he rejoined Chiasma as the VP of Medical Affairs and is currently rebuilding that function.

Leslie Meltzer, PhD is a Medical Affairs profession with over a decade of experience building and leading Medical Affairs teams across a range of therapeutic areas including ultra-rare diseases, hemophilia, multiple sclerosis, pulmonary hypertension, lysosomal storage diseases, and chronic kidney disease. She is currently the Vice President of Global Medical Affairs at Orchard Therapeutics, where she is building a global team to support the development of innovative gene therapies for ultra-rare diseases. Prior to Orchard, Leslie served as the Vice President of Medical Affairs at Keryx Biopharmaceuticals, where she oversaw the commercial launch of Auryxia for the treatment of iron-deficiency anemia in chronic kidney disease. Previously she was the Head of US Medical Affairs for Hemophilia for Biogen, where she led the department and enhanced cross-functional collaboration to drive improved awareness of Biogen’s hemophilia portfolio and prepare the organization for a business unit spin-out. She has also held roles of increasing levels of responsibility in the Biogen multiple sclerosis business and at Actelion Pharmaceuticals US. Leslie earned her Bachelor’s of Science from Brandeis University, and received her PhD in neuroscience from Stanford University.

Roy Palmer – Global Medical Innovation and Effectiveness Lead
Roy received a Ph.D. (D.Phil.) from Oxford University, UK in Cell Physiology and conducted post-doctoral research into heart failure supported by the American Heart Association at UCLA. He was a pioneer in the eHealth space, founding the highly successful internet heath company (TheDailyApple) in 1998. TheDailyApple was acquired by the clinical software company, Caresoft Inc., where he assumed the role of Vice President of Products and Services. In this role, he pioneered the development of numerous clinical and healthcare software applications including developing and launching the industry’s first internet enabled availability of consumer lab test results through an alliance with Quest Diagnostics. In addition, in this role, he led projects with many major Pharma and healthcare companies. Roy then spent 14 years in customer-facing medical roles in Pharma, initially with Pharmacia and then with Pfizer as a Cardiovascular and then Pain Field Medical Director. Combining both areas of passion, Roy assumed the role of Global Innovation and Effectiveness Lead for Pfizer’s Medical Affairs Organization, where he is responsible for the development of global enabling platforms and innovation as well as colleague capabilities and effectiveness.

she oversees Medical Information, Medical Communications, Investigator Initiated Studies, and Grants across Interventional Medicine products. Previous to BTG, Kate was the first Medical Affairs hire in two separate organizations: Hologic and AngioDynamics, where she worked alongside Medical Directors to create highly functioning departments. Due to this experience, Kate brings a diverse medical affairs background to her role, with direct experience in field and medical information management, publications, investigator initiated trial oversight, and medical education. Kate also worked at Cubist Pharmaceuticals prior to it’s acquisition by Merck.
Kate holds a BS from Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Biology and Technical Communication, as well as an MS from Boston University in Health Communication. She is a certified as a Medical Writer by the American Medical Writers Association.
Kate lives in Central Massachusetts with her husband and their 8 year old son. She is an avid marathoner and cyclist.

Tony Russell is currently the Executive Director, Product Strategy and Commercial Planning at Theravance Biopharma leading new product planning and strategy for various therapeutic areas, including orphan diseases and respiratory (COPD, asthma, IPF, lung transplantation). Over the course of a nearly 20 year career, Tony has developed experience across multiple facets in the biopharmaceutical industry, including: therapeutic areas (ranging from oncology and pain to respiratory and orphan indications), functional roles (from medical affairs to product marketing to commercial strategy), company backgrounds (pre-IPO to global commercial entities), and stages of development (pre-development candidate to launch and commercialization). The breadth of experience allows Tony to apply key insights to help look beyond just the data analytics and identify areas for innovation and transformative therapeutics.

After receiving his PharmD from Rutgers University School of Pharmacy, Sagar accepted a commercial fellowship role at Johnson & Johnson. Within the Ortho-McNeil division, he led Market Research projects for multiple franchises, and served as Adjunct Faculty at Rutgers. Following his commercial experience, Sagar spent the next few years within a field medical role at Takeda, eventually joining Questcor Pharmaceuticals to find his home within the rare disease space. He transitioned into a leadership role with oversight for the Nephrology & Neurology field medical teams, as well as serving as interim Medical Director. Currently Sagar serves as the Head of Field Medical at Akcea Therapeutics.
Jodi Smith, PhD, has spent over 17 years in the pharmaceutical industry building her experience in the field both as an individual MSL and MSL manager, as an external medical affairs consultant, and currently as a medical director. Throughout her tenure, Dr. Smith has observed the continuing evolution of medical affairs and the role of the MSL, along with other changes in the pharmaceutical industry overall. Her foundational belief in the importance and significance of medical affairs has only strengthened over time as the need for strategic evidence generation, external engagement, and medical communication and education continues to grow, regardless of the size of the company or product life-cycle stage.
